Yew Dell Gardens

Mission: "To continue the horticultural legacy of Theodore Klein; to encourage exploration of the arboretum, gardens and the extraordinary architectural setting; and to provide opportunities for education, enrichment and enjoyment." History: "Theodore Klein, an internationally known and respected nurseryman and plant expert, devoted much of his 93 years to horticulture. As a businessman, he provided the variety and quantities of plants required by leading residential and commercial developers, making him the region's second largest wholesaler of nursery stock. As a visionary, Klein's interest went far beyond the day-to-day business of managing nursery stock. Yew Dell Gardens, located in Crestwood, Kentucky, stands today as his unique legacy. Yew Dell has a long family history, which began in 1940 when Klein, along with his wife, Martha Lee, purchased the 33-acre farm. The nursery they developed, specialized in growing large quantities of Ilex (holly) and Taxus (yew), and Klein quickly became known internationally as an expert on these groups of plants. Through the years Klein collected over one thousand unusual specimen trees and shrubs, which were displayed and evaluated in his arboretum. Over the course of that time, he not only collected, evaluated and sold beautiful plants, he also developed new plant varieties for the landscape. Among Klein's most successful introductions is Cercis canadensis 'Silver Cloud', a variegated redbud that originated in one of his seedling lots. He would eventually select and name more than three dozen new varieties of garden plants."
