THE IMPACT OF URBAN FORESTS ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE:A MULITCULTURAL PERSPECTIVE
This publication explains a study done to compare cultural differences in outdoor activites of elderly Spanish-speaking immigrants and English-speaking non-Hispanic Whites.
The literature indicates that exposure to, and experience with nature (e.g., trees, plants, outdoor gardens) reduces levels of negative psychological effects. However, there may be cultural differences in nature-related experiences and activities and their effects on older persons. The objective of this study was to examine cultural differences in nature-related activities among elderly Spanish-speaking immigrants and English-speaking non-Hispanic Whites.
Respondents in adult day care and assisted living settings were questioned using nature 'frames' (photographs selected as stimuli) to engage the participants in a discussion of nature-related activities and preferences. Findings indicate that Hispanic elderly prefer natural settings that are more conducive to family and group—oriented socialization and offer opportunities to exercise control. White elderly prefer natural settings that provide opportunities for both passive and active engagement as well as opportunities for exercising control. The findings also suggest several programming and design implications: For the Hispanicelderly, "furnished" natural settings (e.g., shaded courtyard with seating, plaza with informal seating) are more compatible with their preferred activities such associalization. In addition to the "furnished' natural settings, the White elderly were drawn towards "authentic" natural settings (e.g., green lawn, natural pond) that were highly compatible with their preferred activities such as nature enjoyment and quiet reflection. The findings provide a basis for a suggested approach to accommodate meaningful activities and experiences for diverse populations in any nature-based setting.
