Root Growth Beneath Sidewalks Near Trees of Four Genera
Four general of trees from four different plant families located in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S., were examined in this study. The trees were planted in tree lawns 3.5m or less in tree lawn width. Approximately 1,100 sidewalks joints near trees planted in the last 20 years were observed for the presence of a roots. The incidence of one or more roots, 1cm in diameter or larger growing under the sidewalk at sidewalk joints within 1.8m of the main stem were noted. This research has demonstrated that different species of trees can produce root sytems of substantially different size over time.
