Rainwater Harvesting - Supply from the Sky
When landscaping requires a large portion of a community’s total water use, rainwater harvesting is vital to sustain potable water reserves.
There are a couple different types of harvesting techniques discussed in this guide. Simple systems merely divert rooftop rainfall to the location of the plants. Complex systems include a water storage unit for use between rainfall events. Both types of systems control water flow and help reduce flooding and erosion. One section of the guide describes how to build your own rain barrel. This system can be easily maintained if properly built. There are also worksheets and equations useful in calculating available water over a time period and the water requirements for various vegetation types.
