Honoring Mother Earth: Planting Windbreak and Shade Trees on Native American Reservations
This is a handbook for community tree planting projects.
Trees bring much to a community—beauty, shelter from the elements, and a habitat where birds and animals can find food and live.Trees are a reminder of the circle of life that begins and ends with Mother Earth. Trees are an investment for the future of our children, our families, and our community.
Trees, Water & People (TWP) is a nonprofit organization based in Fort Collins, Colorado, that has worked with communities on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota since 2002 to help them plant trees. Each spring, TWP has worked with local community groups to provide hundreds of relatively large trees for families across the reservation.
This handbook, video, and resource CD is our way of sharing what we've learned from planting trees with reservation communities. We've had a lot of success with this program, and we believe strongly in the benefits of planting trees. We hope by sharing this information, we can inspire your community to create its own tree planting project. Tree planting, events are a good way to bring the community together, to teach people about the benefits of planting trees, and to leave a lasting legacy for the future.
