Hawaii’s Termites—An Identification Guide

This publication helps identify the seven different types of termites found on the islands.

Some of the species are harmful to buildings while others only infest trees. The two most destructive termites are the Formosan subterranean termite and the West Indian drywood termite. Each species has unique characteristics and create different patterns in the wood. This publication includes an identification key as well as a chart comparing each species habitat, climate moisture content, swarming time, location in the state. Termite eradication can be difficult but new technologies such as baits will prevent and control the pest problem.
