Factors Influencing Stem Breakage of Conifers in High Winds
In a study of the stability of coniferous tree stems in relations to damage by snow, Petty and Worrel (1981) have shown that an assumption of uniform strain in the outer wood of the bent stem provides a useful basis for calculating the contribution of the weights of the stem and crown to the total bending moment applied to the stem. In this article a more sophisticated treatment is given, takinf in account of both the variation of wind speed within the canopy and also the vertical distribution of crown weight.
