Colorado Habitat Tree

This report discusses the highly interactive exhibit, "Colorado Habitat Tree" to be created by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The Great Outdoor Colorado Trust Fund awarded the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, in partnership with El Paso County, a challenge grant of $85,000 toward the creation of a highly interactive exhibit, the "Colorado Habitat Tree." This educational experience, one of just a few like it in the country, will engage families in hands-on learning about the magic and importance of trees and forest ecosystems. The tree will be designed to be accessible to children of all physical abilities.

The two-story exhibit will allow families to "walk inside" a tree. Through exploring both inside and outside, families will find out about the intricate life of a tree, including such things as: how roots draw up water, how animals and insects use trees for homes and food, the impact of lightening, and the importance of dead trees in nature. Zoo guests may explore an animal burrow, sit in a giant owl's nest, feel the different textures of tree bark, take apart an owl pellet and more.

The Zoo is in the process of raising $100,000 as a match to secure the GOCO challenge grant. The "Colorado Habitat Tree" is scheduled to be completed in spring of 1998.
