Soil compaction and loosening effects on soil physics and tree growth

Reference Type
Conference Proceedings (Chapter)

"The effects of subsoil compaction, topsoil compaction, mechanical subsoiling with an excavator and pneumatic subsoiling using a Terralift soil aerator on a number of soil characteristics were measured at two sites, one with sandy loam and another with loam over clay loam. Soil compaction was undertaken under controlled conditions prior to subsoiling. Compaction had a negative influence on soil physical properties and plant growth. Subsoiling with an excavator had a good loosening effect on the soils and increased growth on the sandy loam. The soil aeration treatment did loosen the sandy loam but not the clay loam. No growth increase was observed." [Abstract]
