"This paper provides a general discussion on linkages within the urban ecosystem, and demonstrates a connection between human and natural systems." (p.36) [UMN]

"An understanding of the inner workings of an ecosystem and the links among all of its elements is critical to effective communication and management of complex natural resource issues. This understanding starts by recognizing that built environments and developing communities are ecosystems, involved in dynamic processes and cycles. A matrix is developed where linkages can be described along a vertical scale, looking at feature layers within an ecosystem; a horizontal plane which follows a gradient from the urban center to the rural landscape, and, component linkages between natural, economic, and social systems. Knowledge of these linkages will enable citizens, natural resource managers and policy makers to make informed and directed decisions which could ensure ecosystem health and sustainability. This paper provides a general discussion on likages within the urban ecosystem, and demonstrates a connection between human and natural systems." [Abstract]
