Soil mixes for urban sites
Conference Proceedings (Chapter)

"Constructed soils or soil mixes have a variety of applications in the urban environment. Initially, they were created for use in prescription athletic turf. Today, they are used in planters at grade and above, in planting beds, and as replacement soils in parkways adjacent to and under structural sidewalks (4, 6). Soil mixtures are created to serve different purposes; each mix will be a unique combination of materials designed to fit the specific objectives of the planting site. Designing the appropriate soil mix is as important as the design of the hardscape associated with the landscape to be installed. Correct construction and installation of engineered soils are vitally important for the proper function of the soil (9). This paper describes effective techniques for the design, construction, and installation of engineered soils by looking at the components used and design concepts associated with their utilization. Constructed soils are made from a mix of mineral soil material, organic matter, and chemical additives for the purpose of providing rootable space for landscape plants outside the nursery production industry. They differ from nursery mixes in that they are designed to be maintained without volumetric loss for an extended length of time." [Abstract]
