The Healing Power of the Urban Forest: Impacts on ADHD (00-DG-11244225-354)

Grant Number
00-DG-11244225-354

This project looked at the effects of urban forests on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Preliminary research suggests that the "everyday" urban forest may play a pivotal, healing role in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD is a cripplingbiological disorder afflicting 5-7% of all school-age children and 2-5 million adult Americans. Initial findings indicate that ADHD symptoms disappear or substantially lessen after activities in "green" settings. In this project, we are (1) conducting anationwide study documenting the ways in which green neighborhoods, green schools, and green parks and recreation areas help heal ADHD children; (2)disseminating the findings to policymakers, the public, and other audiences; and (3)leveraging the findings for future support from other funding sources.

Project objectives:

•Document the healing impacts of the urban forest on ADHD. If our hypotheses are correct, these efforts will:

-show the link between the urban forest (UF) and reduced ADHD symptoms in every corner of the nation

-show the cause-effect relationship between the urban forest and reduced ADHD

•Disseminate these findings to policymakers, the public, and the scientific community

•Leverage the Council's investment for additional support
