Conservation Arboriculture: Care of Veteran Trees

One-day seminar with Neville Fay and Philip van Wassenaer. This seminar will discuss preserving mature trees from unnecessary removal, improving understanding of the aging process in trees. In this seminar, the instructors will discuss veteran tree care, veteran tree habitat, biodiversity, co-evolution, and conservation management approaches that include newly developed pruning techniques. The instructors will demonstrate the use of Picus tomography, a non-invasive tool that uses sound waves to assess decay in trees.

Neville Fay --Treework Environmental Practice

Neville Fay is managing director and principal consultant at Treework Environmental Practice (TEP). He has been an arboricultural consultant for twenty-five years. Neville’s approach is non-hierarchical, and operates in a multi-disciplinary practice with colleagues who contribute through their own study, passion, commitment and professional dedication to meet client objectives. Key practice areas include environmental, amenity, habitat and risk management. He is an expert witness with projects that include tree-related environmental claims and cases where harm results from tree failure.

His philosophy is that arboriculture can only benefit through collaboration with other disciplines (e.g. risk decision-making, engineering and biodiversity); through this it is possible to achieve reasonable “non-defensive,” sustainable tree management systems while meeting duty of care.

He works nationally and internationally, advising organizations on arboricultural practice, tree-survey methodology, and tree risk and veteran-tree management. He is co-author of the Specialist Survey Method (English Nature 1997); the UK standard for surveying veteran trees and Veteran Trees: A guide to Risk and Responsibility (English Nature 2000) and Tree Surveys: a guide to good practice (Arboricultural Association 2005).

He lectures on veteran trees, arboriculture and the development of appropriate techniques for managing trees for hazard and habitat. He has initiated the TEP seminar series, Innovations in Arboriculture. This aims to raise levels of awareness and knowledge in arboriculture by bringing ideas that are not yet commonly understood or applied in the UK.

Philip van Wassenaer -- Urban Forest Innovations Inc.

Philip van Wassenaer is the principal consultant for Urban Forest Innovations Inc. (UFI). UFI specializes in the preservation, enhancement and management of all aspects of the urban forest using a research- and science-based approach.

As well as having over 15 years experience as a practicing arborist, Philip has been a certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) since 1996 and a member of the prestigious American Society of Consulting Arborists since 1999. Combining his arboricultural qualifications with an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences and a Masters Degree in Urban Forest Management allows Philip to bring a unique approach to his arboricultural and urban forestry consulting assignments.
